About Our Fines Herbes

Fines Herbes are a traditional French seasoning herb combination. Masterclass explains it this way. In 1903, famed French chef Auguste Escoffier was the first to name the herb blend in writing, which was later confirmed by Julia Child who defined fines herbes as a mixture of fresh parsley, chives, tarragon, and chervil for her American audience.

• Fines Herbs vs Herbes de Provence

  Many people ask the question, what is the difference between Fines Herbs and Herbes de Provence. The answer is simple, the ingredients, the taste, and the location from where the come.

  The ingredients in Fines Herbs are as mentioned above: parsley, chervil, tarragon and chives. The last three ingredients give Fines Herbs it s distinct favlor. Chervin and chives come from the onion family, but with a lighter, let pungent attack. Leaving a delicious and delicate onion flavor. Tarragon, similar to the chervil and chives, brings a light anise flavor, not overpowering, but a delicious dimension and umami.

  Herbes de Provence are cultivated in Southern France using herbs from the region. This part of France tends to be sunnier and warmer throughout the year, yielding a bit heartier herbs and ingredients. Herbes de Provence are generally comprised of a mix of thyme, savory, oregano, rosemary, and at MarnaMaria we add little bit of French lavender as well!

  With completely different herbs in Herbes de Provence, the flavor profiles are quite a bit different.

  We love it for eggs, omelettes and quiches, but it is a delicious add to soups and cream sauces as well. It is also delicious with in braised chicken dishes, savory crepes, mussels, and even as the herb addition in your favorite vinaigrette.
